American Airlines Flys the iPad

American Airlines has completed deploying iPads to every aircraft in its fleet, according to a press release by the company. More than 8,000 tablets have been issued to pilots and trainers as a replacement for their earlier paper-based flight bags, which weighed around 35 pounds each. Each iPad is loaded with essential information such as flight manuals and navigation charts.

While the switch should make life easier for pilots, American Airlines also has a financial motivation for making the switch. The company says it expects to save about 400,000 gallons of gas every year, worth about $1.2 million.
